How we calculate your score and where the data comes from

Each area (water, power and heating, communication, evacuation and, if your household includes children, older people, pets or someone who needs extra support, your loved ones too) scores from 0 to 100 points. Items carry different weights, and the weights depend on your home: a water supply counts for more if you live on a high floor of a block of flats or have a well with an electric pump, and keeping warm without power counts for more if your heating needs electricity. We always assess for the heating season, because that is when a power cut is most dangerous. Your overall score is the average of all areas. If a critical item is missing (e.g. drinking water, a light source, a radio, an evacuation backpack), your overall score is capped at 64 points.

    Quantity targets:

    • Drinking water: 3 litres per person per day for 3 days (the Ministry of the Interior's safety guide, Poradnik bezpieczeństwa, MSWiA). For a dog or cat we assume about 1 litre a day (a rough estimate).
    • Water for washing and flushing: 5 litres per person per day (a rough estimate). We count both water you have stored and the capacity of empty containers you can fill quickly (bath, jerrycans, water bottles, pots).
    • Containers for collecting water from a water tanker: at least about 10 litres of capacity per person (a rough estimate).
    • Power banks: about 10,000 mAh per phone, roughly two full charges to last the next two days (a rough estimate that depends on the phone).
    • Torches: one per person, not counting small children.
